In the province of Giza, outside Cairo, Egypt, a serious railway accident occurred that left a significant number of victims and injured. The country's health ministry confirmed that at least seven people died, while more than 112 people were injured in the collision.

The event took place on Sunday, on the line connecting Giza to Fayoum. A train on this route hit the rear of another railway vehicle running on the Cairo-Aswan route. According to information provided by the authorities, the hit train rolled off the track, reaching a rural road in the al-Ayyat region.

Egypt's National Railroad Team quickly mobilized major resources at the scene. Emergency rescue teams, as well as staff, were dispatched to unlock the remains of the vehicles and to restore rail services to normal operation as soon as possible. The evacuation and transport operations involved over 70 ambulances, transporting all the wounded to nearby hospitals.

The al-Ayyat region, where the collision took place, has an unfortunate history of rail transportation in Egypt. This area was once the scene of the worst rail disaster in Egyptian history. In 2002, more than 370 people died in a fire that spread on a train carrying tourists on its way to southern Cairo. Also in 2009, dozens of train accidents in that area resulted in deaths.

The population of Egypt, estimated at 110 million, is largely dependent on rail transport. However, the interregional network, one of the most extensive in Africa, requires urgent modernization. Although Egypt has allocated billions of dollars over the last decade to upgrade transport infrastructure, including new highways and high-speed rail lines, the modernization of old rail services has not been fully realized.
