Iran Launches Mass Civilian Mobilization Amid Rising US Tensions

The JanfadaCampaign and Public Military Parades

The Islamic Republic has initiated a sweeping recruitment drive for civilians. Officially named Janfadaor Sacrifice for Iran, the campaign trains and arms volunteer citizens to integrate into state security frameworks under the Basij militia. The Basij operate directly beneath the powerful umbrella of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The focal point of this massive mobilization occurred in central Tehran. Thousands of men, women, and children marched through the main thoroughfares. Many participants wore protective masks and sunglasses during the public military drill. Female members affiliated with the IRGC carried carbines proudly throughout the procession, an alarming scene captured by photographer Vahid Salemi.

Massive banners plastered across Tehran aggressively promoted the initiative. The public messaging featured a stark rhetorical question: Do you know how to work with this? Posters displayed various tactical hardware, including rocket-propelled grenades, assault rifles, sniper weapons, and advanced communications gear. Officials initially launched these provocative messages in late March amid escalating hostilities with the United States and Israel.

Hassan Hassanzadeh, the Tehran IRGC chief, reported staggering figures to state broadcaster IRIB. He claimed that over 600,000 individuals registered on the dedicated website within a single week to join the campaign. Authorities expect total sign-ups to surpass one million people, having already established 1,000 initial units officially designated as battalions.

Recruitment Numbers, Symbolism, and Statistical Controversies

Symbolism heavily influences the regime's reporting of attendance metrics. Organizers initially stated that the march featured exactly 313,000 participants. While broadcast footage failed to visibly support this high count, the number holds deep religious significance. In Twelver Shia tradition, 313 represents the core companions of the hidden messianic imam, Mahdi, who will eventually return to establish ultimate justice.

Data transparency has faced intense scrutiny since the initiative began. Early on, officials made the astonishing claim of 31 million registrations. This figure accounted for slightly over one third of Iran's total population and more than half of all citizens aged twelve and older.

Diaspora activists inspected the web platform's source code and uncovered a stark reality. The actual registration count languished below four million individuals. Furthermore, the portal required only a telephone number without any national identification number, sparking widespread skepticism regarding statistical accuracy.

Following the public exposure of these inflated numbers, the online counter slowed down dramatically. However, Hassanzadeh recently reversed course with a bold new assertion. He claimed that 33 million people are now registered within the system.

This ongoing statistical discrepancy continues to fuel fierce internal and external debates. Observers question the regime's actual capability to coordinate and verify such a massive reserve force. These doubts persist within a tense geopolitical climate where diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran remain deadlocked, and Iranian authorities aggressively challenge American assertions regarding the vital Strait of Hormuz.
